07 November VOTE!!!No matter what your beliefs are, no matter what your affiliation is, no matter what you have going on today, please make your voice heard. No excuses! Get out and vote! 25 September The Verdict's InI've actually managed to squeeze some primetime viewing in between gluttonous football watching and although I reserve judgement for when I've seen all the new shows I have to say I think Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is the winner so far. I never got into the West Wing very much but The American President is one of my favorite movies and this show is pure Aaron Sorkin. The dialogue is fresh, the characters have great potential and I'm always a big fan of anything that gives a meta view of Hollywood, L.A. etc. Oh, and I want Amanda Peet's wardrobe. 18 September Pay UpFor my dad's birthday in June I bought him tickets to the David Grey concert. First the concert was canceled and then I had to travel to San Jose for work the date it was rescheduled. A concert this summer never worked out because of all the wedding shenanigans I was involved in so now long story short he wants to go to a Seahawks game. Gulp. I can't believe how expensive tickets are when just a short time ago you couldn't even give those things away for FREE!! Anyways, the one game I want to go is the Giants game which is this Sunday and not only am I burned out on traveling at this point and living one foot in Seattle/one foot in PDX but it also conflicts with a good friend's birthday. Dilemma!! The other option that would be appealing (esp. for my dad) is the Chargers game. Too bad it's on Christmas Eve. Sigh. So I guess it will have to be Green Bay in late November which at least is a Monday Night football game.
My dad is lucky I really 24 August When Did Michael Keaton Get that Old??I saw White Noise last night, the movie about EVP (electric voice phenomenon) starring a VERY wrinkled Michael Keaton with randomly frosted hair. It was quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I'm not going to even review it, it was that bad. The script must have been passed around like 12 times. I knew I should have just watched the rerun of One Tree Hill. 23 August Hobbit-SizedThis morning on the way to work I saw a billboard that said the minimum height requirement for child safety seats is now 4' 9". Are you freakin' kidding me? I would have been a freshman in high school before I could have sat in a big-girl seat. As it is now I'm not much taller than that and I do worry that if my airbag ever deploys my head will be severed from my body. I'm all for child safety but I think this might be pushing it a bit! 21 August Las Cositas Que Me Hacen FelicidadThings that made me happy this weekend (it's good to remember the little things)
The Lentil Festival was tons o' fun and as usual I was sad to leave Pullman. I'm so excited to go back for the Oregon game in October I can hardly wait!!! 16 August Back to SchoolWhat is wrong with me? I'm listening to Back to School Fred Meyer commercials, reading "Dorm Room Essentials" articles on MSN.com, and watching kids fall fashion segments on the Today Show, all with red-faced envy. I am already planning a Century Club party for the fall and also want to do a pub crawl of all the U of P bars in the neighborhood. I have never before had school nostalgia before but it's hitting me hard this year. All I want to do is go to football games, drink beer from a keg, and wear a plaid skirt.
Good thing I'm headed this weekend to the wheat fields of Pullman, my old stomping grounds and the perfect place to do all three! 07 August Pick me! Pick me!Everyone is now sick and tired of hearing my Kelly Clarkson ring for the magenta Razr. I tried to download the new Justin Timberlake song as a ring but so far no luck. Please indicate interest in the following ring tones in the comment section (those votes belonging to people sitting within close proximity of my cube or living with me will be weighted accordingly):
P.S. Any comments that do not reflect or appreciate the sarcastic nature of this post will be deleted immediately...
06 August So Happy TogetherIs there anything better than 85 degree weather, Sunday night football, and a bowl of Hagen Daas? I suppose actually being at the football game while drinking a beer would be but this was honestly the best Sunday night I've had in a long time. Is that sad? 04 August I Can Feel it Coming in the Air TonightI just saw the advertisement for the start of Sunday Night Football this weekend and can hardly contain my excitement!! Ever since World Cup I have been in a sports limbo. I've gone to a few Mariner games that were lots of fun but just not satisfying the sport's crazy that's all stocked up in me. I'm also getting the plans going for a big weekend in Pullman for the U of O/WSU game. Should be fun to get all the Ducks and Cougs in my life together for once. I'm also not ready for summer to be over yet by any means but it's just been such a relentlessly active summer dedicated to everyone else's activities that I am looking forward to sitting down on a Sunday with a cozy sweater on, watching some football and eating some warm soup. 26 July Guess Who's Back?Just in time for a summer poll. What will be the song of the summer of 2006? Right now my votes on Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado and Timbaland (pretty much anything Timbaland does is golden in my book) but I now have SexxyBack (also produced by Mr.T) from Justin on repeat. The only problem is you can't download this song ANYWHERE. So, what's your favorite song of the summer? 15 February You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore...Just in case you were wondering I haven't turned completely bitter. When I showed up to work yesterday my dear friends Jessica and Tara had brought me beautiful flowers on Valentine's Day with a fluffy pink tafetta skirt and a sweet note attached. Reminding me that even though mean people do indeed suck, there are also some pretty great ones in this world and I am lucky to have them in my life. Thanks ladies!
06 February Babes in ToylandThis weekend brought 2 new people to my world under almost under 180 degrees of circumstances. My cousin and his wife had a baby boy Connor Owen Wedlake Murphy and my great friends Corie and Ed had a boy named Liam Hoyt Wiren Chapel. Connor couldn't wait to make his appearance and came just minutes after the induction. Michelle was literally holding the baby in so the doctor could make his way back to deliver him!! Liam on the other hand waited almost 2 weeks after his due date and 2 rounds of pitocin to make his way into the world. His poor mother Corie then had to endure a C-section to deliver him. Now both boys are here safe and sound (Connor is about 6lbs and Liam is a little over 9lbs). I can't wait to meet both of them!
03 February Going Fur in the WorldCongrats to my dear friend Andie who recently placed this great story in the Seattle Times. Andie is involved with the Women's Bioethics Project is devoted to women's health and biotechnology issues. The nonprofit group hopes to have 100 donated furs — tax deductible — by the end of March to complete that many hand-crafted jewelry boxes by Mother's Day. Now I have to go find that mink stole I have somewhere....
Nice work Andie! 02 February Damn You Punxsutawney Phil!Well, I decided for many reasons to ski but I am rapidly regretting my decision after seeing that Punxsutawney Phil saw his stupid shadow today. I really can't take much more of this weather I tell ya. If I could fly to L.A. even for the day it would do me good. Well, at least there is fun stuff planned in the coming weeks and I am still planning to do L.A. in March/April sometime. I hope to get up to Seattle this weekend for SuperBowl madness as well. Yes, that means more free Snow Cap which is dangerous and wrong but it makes for a much more fun SuperBowl, just not a fun few days after.....
Other trips on the possible docket: Vancouver BC, Mexico, and the beach condo which I haven't been to in months.
Also am in the process of posting a whole bunch of pics now that I figured out the file transfer glitch in my bluetooth capabilities. The Razr doesn't take very good pictures (I MUST get a new camera-any reccos?) but at least I have some on-the-spot record of memories. 25 January Vacation PollSurf or Ski? That is the dilemma facing me this month. I have been experiencing some serious SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) this winter and am sure I'm not alone. So, the plan was to hope on a flight to L.A. see some sun, eat some real Mexican food, and lay on the beach. Problem is the weekend I picked conflicts with most my SoCal contingencies schedules. Then I found out I am invited over President's Day weekend to Schweitzer, Idaho for some skiing. Hmmmmm. So, much like my HP/Walk the Line dilemma I am offering my fate up to my readers and like that fat kid from Stand By Me posits in Jerry MaGuire: "Should I surf or ski?":

Movie ReviewsAnother great thing I have reclaimed with singledom is seeing lots and lots of movies. Over the holidays I saw Munich and took dad to see Walk the Line. Both enjoyable. I finally caught Brokeback Mountain and now this past weekend viewed the new Woody Allen film Match Point. Here are my topline thoughts on each:
Brokeback Mountain: I must say this movie wasn't really what I expected. I had been looking forward to it for quite sometime as Ang Lee is one of my favorite directors (The Ice Storm is in my top ten) and although Heath Ledger doesn't do much for me I have a slight obsession with Jake Gyllenhall. There has been much hype and discussion about this movie and like most of the critically aclaimed movies I just feel like it falls a little short. It's a beautifully filmed movie and a very interesting story with superb acting but I wasn't feeling the Great Epic Lovestory. It's not because they are male--it's just the nature of the characters and their relationship. Jake's character Jack is an opportunist/manipulator who uses people to get what he needs/wants and Heath's character Ennis is just looking fill the void his dead parents have left. I also felt it was very ambiguous wether they were actually gay or not. Not that this matters, but I just wasn't expecting that after all the hype, reviews I read etc. Also, I know Michelle Williams has gotten heaps of praise (including a Golden Globe nomination) but I think the superior female performance was by Anne Hathaway, especially because I've seen her in the Princess Diaries movies. Seriously, there is a scene at the end that she deserves the Oscar alone for. It's truly the most powerful scene in the movie-very subtle, yet very haunting.
Match Point: I have to confess I am an unabashed Woody Allen fan and that I have even enjoyed some of his latter day sins (Deconstructing Harry, Everyone Says I Love You). That said, I think this film would be enjoyable for people not of the Allen persuasion. Hands down it's a good noir thriller. Yes, there are some stylistic elements that scream Allen (music, narcisstic characters) but this film is certainly more plot driven than most of his others and without revealing too much there are some enjoyable twists I actually didn't see coming (which is saying a lot for me). I highly recommend it. Football FeverHere is something most of my current friends either don't know or have recently discovered about me: I love football. I love sports in general and baseball the most but I also have a strong, strong love for football. I was a sports management minor in college, was field manager for the WSU baseball team, and watched SportsCenter everynight (I heart Stu) before I went to bed. My dream since I was in 7th grade until I was about 22 was to be sportscaster. Not a color commentator because I don't have and will never have the knowledge for that but I would have loved to have been on SportsCenter or even on the local news as a sportscaster. So what happened you ask? Well, I got a serious boyfriend who absolutely hated sports. It wasn't his fault that I lost this part of my identity but it just wasn't fun to watch sports, get in the spirit, attend games when your S.O. doesn't feel the love (actually this applied to a lot of my life/interests but that is a whole other post). And so with my singledom I have also reclaimed this part of my life. I couldn't have picked a better football season to do it in. Although my college team Coug'd like they usually do, they DID beat the Huskies in the Apple Cup which is all we can really ask for. My Vince Young won the Rosebowl, Peyton Manning is hands-down one of my all-time favorite players and now my hometeam the Seahawks is going to the SuperBowl!!! Now I won't even pretend that I'm not a Johnny Come Latte to Seahawk fever but it's good to see some nice guys get what they deserve for once. I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime, that's for sure. In fact, this will be one of the best SuperBowl's in a lifetime. I will actually be interested in watching the game and really because the Steelers have played so great this season and have such great, die-hard fans (Jerome Bettis's parents are the cutest things I have ever seen) I think it will be a great outcome no matter who wins. When SuperBowl Sunday has come and gone it will be bittersweet because I have looked forward to every weekend of football and I will be sad that its over. I'll have to line-up some WinterHawk games to tide me over to baseball season (don't care much for Nascar--I'm SO done with cars!!!!).....
The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad DayAlthough I am generally annoyed by blogging about blogging I just have to say I have had hundereds (literally) of blog postings piling up in my head and no time or energy to get them down on cyberspace but today finally pushed me over the edge. First of all I am dog sitting in Tigard. Nice house, and very cute (Italian Greyhound) dog, but he could use some training. The flipside should be of no surprise to those who know me: I can't deal with the suburbs. I know it works for some people but not for me. I just feel all isolated and get panicky and start looking for non-strip mall/chain restaurant type places. I'm on this gig for 2 weeks so to say it's been a adjustment is an understatment. To add to that, Gandalf has decided the greater Bull Mountain/Tigard area is Middle Earth and he needs to go return the Ring so keeps taking off. He did it the other night and I had to chase him for about a 1/2 a mile. Julie came after us in the car but I had retreived him by then and had to carry him home the rest of the way. I thought I would have a heart attack. Then this morning he does it again when I am going out to warm up the car. This time I got smart and went after him in the car but it still took a while. There are lots of steep hills (hence the mountain) and fog that make great doggy hiding places so it's GREAT FUN chasing after him. Then the 2nd fun part of my day begins when I get pulled over on the main road out where I'm staying driving into work. I really had no idea why I was getting pulled over because I knew I literally could not have been going 2-3 miles above the 35 mph limit. Of course with my luck it is a female officer. She asks me if I know why I'm getting pulled over (no) and if I knew how fast I was going (no-cop to nothing I've learned). She asks me if I thought I was going 80-100 (wtf????-um no) or more like 35-40 (yes, probably). Shen then says I was going 38 (okay-what's the problem again??) but that I also went through a school zone. I told her I'm not from around here and it's foggy and I still don't even know where the school is. End of story I got a $231 ticket for going through a school zone at 3 miles over the regular speed limit 2 minutes before (9:58) the school zone restrictions end in a neighborhood I've never been in before in my life. Needlees to say I'm fighting this one. How come I drive usualy within reason and get a ticket and everyone else gets warnings??? Now I get to work and realize my favorite coffee mug is just gone daddy gone. And it's not even noon yet. Oy. |
